Pat McGrath will receive the CFDA's Founder's Award on June 5.Photographed by extreme Cass Bird

When the makeup artist Pat McGrath takes the stage to collect the Founder’s Award at the CFDA Awards on Monday night, she most likely will not be wearing molten gold on her lips or eyes so smoky it’s as though a five-alarm fire has mysteriously passed over her face, eyebrows singed off in the process. Instead she will do as she does for her New York fashion week clients (including Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, and Victoria Beckham) and “blur the lines between elegant restraint and playful cheekiness.” There will be “fresh skin,” involving the application of “three different foundations to look as though I am wearing none,” and an epic application of mascara: “I spend my time doing each lash,” says McGrath. “It's about time—taking my time until the lashes are huge, as large as I can get them.” Her hair will be epic in length and perfectly straight, much like that of her pals and frequent collaborators KKW and Naomi; with less than a week to go before the ceremony, “she” is already installed. (Yes, like ocean liners and weather systems, “major” extensions take a feminine pronoun.)

What McGrath will wear to the awards is yet to be decided, because although lashes may take time, she has all too little of it. The interview for this story, the occasion of which is to mark her recognition by the CFDA as the most important editorial makeup artist working in fashion and beauty for more than two decades, was conducted in a quick phone call from a set on the Sunday night of a holiday weekend. McGrath had been working for five weeks straight, sans day off, masterminding that wow-inducing red lip at Prada’s Resort show in Milan, those wicked geometric brows for Louis Vuitton in Kyoto, and the strongly beautiful saucer eyes at Valentino in New York. “I do not have much down time at the moment,” she shrugs. (If she did you would find her at the Mayr Clinic in Austria, “my absolute obsession,” where the fashion world elite retires to rest their organs between sprints of fabulosity.)

McGrath’s sprints involve over 60 shows a season, every editorial shot by Steven Meisel, a team that swells to 75 at the height of fashion month, and her eponymous product line Pat McGrath Lab, which has achieved a brilliant and cult-y status since the drop of her first gold powder in 2015. Lab showcases both her extraordinary ability to make “extreme makeup” universal in its appeal and wearability and her ceaseless eye for what and who is new. Her “muses” for Lab are the club-centric girls and boys she discovers through social media, and for whom her iconicity extends far beyond the backstage, scene-sters such as Duo Raw from Sweden and Paloma Elsesser and Thatgirlsussi from New York. Lab and Instagram have also transformed McGrath into a public figure who is as recognized and hounded as those she paints for the red carpet. Has this shifted the power dynamic between her and her fabulous friends? “The only difference for me is that people are obsessed with the colors that I make,” says McGrath. “‘You better give me that blue! Show me what’s new! Give me that lipstick! What’s in your handbag? I know you have something!’ There are a lot of courier services whipping across the city.”

McGrath’s visions for beauty in the future are colorful in a different sense. “I think with beauty there is so much to be done. A pill that will give you everlasting youth. To choose the exact age you want to stay at from a hundred pill bottles? That would be fun,” she laughs. And then she adds, no doubt thinking of the three separate foundations that await her application come Monday night: “It would be great if perfect skin required less work. That would be the best ever. Less work or a pill. One a day. Like vitamin C.”
